The official PERSIL homepage. ..SOUND Persil’s sound can be described as electro-pop with fuzzy guitars and sensuous, sweet girl vocals. The songs, which are based on inventive self-produced samples and groovy bass lines, sound playful, joyful and summery, while the lyrics are lightly ironical. Reviews say Persil sounds like Captain Beefheart, Berlin, Bauer, Belle and Sebastian, Belly, Bis, Blondie, The Breeders, Broadcast, The Clears, Cocteau Twins, Deerhoof, Electrelane, Goldfrapp, Grandaddy, Jesus & Mary Chain, Joy Division, Ladytron, Land of the Loops, Lush, Melys, Mogul, My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Nico, Pet Shop Boys, Pulp, Saint Etienne, Saloon, Shampoo, Sleater-Kinney, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Stereo Total, Strawberry Switchblade, Solex, Vive la Fête, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Young Marble Giants, The Wedding Present and/or Robert Wyatt. ..HISTORY Persil are David and Martine, two noisy neighbours from Amsterdam. Persil formed in 1997, after David stopped playing the drums in Sonetic Vet (also known for singer Elizabeth, who is now Solex). The first track Persil ever recorded was a cover of the Pixies' 'Isla de Encanta', which was released on a Pixies covers compilation. Persil's debut single 'Agony Aunt' was released in the UK in December 1999 on the Shifty Disco label and was followed by a John Peel BBC Radio 1 session, a short UK tour and a USA release (with a.o. Grandaddy). The release of the 4 track 2002 ep Snapcracklepop (Star Harbour/Shifty Disco), which includes a cover of the Wedding Present's 'Kennedy', led to a second John Peel BBC Radio 1 session and second UK tour. A split-single with Dutch band Zea was released early 2003 on Transformed Dreams. Persil's debut album Duotone was released on Transformed Dreams in 2004. The album release party, with Melys and David Gedge & Simon Cleave from Cinerama/The Wedding Present, took place in Amsterdam's Paradiso on 10 February 2004. In the weeks following the release, John Peel played eight Duotone tracks in his BBC Radio 1 show. In March/April 2004 Persil went on their first USA tour, including a showcase at the SXSW festival in Texas, and shortly afterward recorded their third John Peel session. In May 2004 the band embarked on their third UK tour. After meeting Debbie Harry in New York in April 2004, Persil were invited to support Blondie at their only Dutch gig in June. In September 2004 Persil returned to the UK for this year's second tour and also played a showcase at the In The City music conference in Manchester. In October the band went on a second USA tour. Persil have been invited to join The Wedding Present on their 2005 UK tour from 20-28 February. From 3-13 March they will do some shows with Melys. 'Tune-up', a new ep with 4 tracks on it, will be released in April 2005. For release info see

..LIVE On stage David plays guitar & keyboard and Martine sings and occasionally plays the keyboard. Usually there is also a bass player present. Drums sounds come from a Boss DR5, an excellent yet simple 4-track drummachine, while a Boss Dr Sample SP 303 plays samples. Rhythms are triggered by a near-vintage Yamaha MDF-2 midi file player. A background projection containing some Super-8 footage is shown whenever a beamer is available. In the UK, USA, Germany and Holland Persil played with bands as diverse as Blondie, The Wedding Present, Melys, Mates of State, Enon, Seedling, Freezepop, Magoo, Zea, Motormark, Solex, Chris T-T, Marumari, and many others. ..DUOTONE ALBUM INFO With Duotone Persil prove that for writing catchy pop songs no clichés are needed, but that originality and inventiveness are the main ingredients. The Duotone album was released in February (NL) / March (UK) 2004. Some songs were released before (in limited editions) but these were all re-recorded for the album. Nearly all instruments were played by David and/or Martine. The exceptions: the extra voice on 'Traces of Knots' belongs to Damon Tutunjian of the Swirlies, who recorded his vocals in Cambridge, MA (USA) and then sent them to Amsterdam via the internet; the trumpet on 'June' and 'Mum' was played by Arnold de Boer of Zea and the cello on 'Out' is by Ellen Brinksma. Although the songs may sound playful at times NO 'toys' or 'cheap secondhand instruments' were used on the album, as some reviewers claim. The drumcomputer, sampler and keyboard we use on stage are for live purposes only, in the studio we use computers. All keyboard sounds on the album are made with Soundfonts. 'Hair!' features a solo on the world's only Marmite Theremin (see album photos). The album was recorded in our own studio, of which you see a picture on the cd cover. There is indeed a drumkit there, but that wasn't played on the album. Instead, all drum sounds are programmed using FruityLoops. All tracks were sequenced in N-track and the album was mastered with Izotope Ozone. For music samples see
